What did not realize though, was the magnitude of his actions. Columbus always saw the Indians as nothing more than property. He would take Indians captive and force them to find gold, the Indians had to find a certain amount f gold every three months, in an area where gold was very scarce, and if they did not there is a good chance that there hands would be cut off. The enslavement, murder, and mutilation of hundreds of thousands of Indians would just be the beginning. Through further murder and the spread of infectious disease the whole Indian population would be pretty much wiped out. Zion imposing this Marxist viewpoint on his readers gives them a look at the Indians struggle with the colonization of America. Zion finally gives explanation as to why such a populated, powerful and widespread group of people would be on the verge of extinction in the modern age. Zions portrayal of American history has changed my perspective on how America really did become the place I call home. 4. Zion believes that there is a bias in every piece of history and in every fact because no fact is completely pure. The facts presented by writers, teachers and historians are ones that they have deemed worthy of being presented, making it utterly impossible to create a work that is not bias. Their work is in correlation with their interests, which I believe is a better way to learn about history, from multiple viewpoints. Zion chooses to aim his facts to increase the awareness of class distinctions, racial injustice, sexuality inequality and national arrogance. A piece of writing is always better and more interesting when you can tell the author really stood by what they were writing. So yes, I do agree with Zions viewpoint, every author has had their own experiences and their own curiosities, and those will show up in their writing.

One of the themes that can be explored trough this novel is civilization and savagery. The central concern of Lord of The Flies deals with the collapse of civilization to the rebirth of civilization. The conflict appear from this theme is communicate through the disintegration of the British young boys well look behaviour as they adapt themselves to a uncivilized, brutal life in the jungle after they were stranded on an island. The theory of inborn evil human evil hold an essential aspect in this theme as the young boys evolve more primitive, the beast that they scared of developed within themselves. The inborn evil is the beast that destructs the civilization as savageness call for its status. In the novel, The lord of the flies symbolizes the existence of the beast within the young boys mind. The rift of the theme of civiliza tion and savagery is also communicated through the symbols exist in this novel, the conch which related with the character Ralph and the lord of the flies which related with the character Jack. The fundamental concernment of this novel is the theme of civilization and savagery where civilization giving away to savagery within human heart, as the young boys shed their civilization for savagery after being influence by fear, superstition and their desires. Through the whole of this novel, the theme civilization and savagery communicates by the conflict between Ralph and Jack, who respectively represent civilization and savagery. The vary theory are deliberate by each two boys different attitude toward authorization on the island. Ralph who was selected to become a chief used his authority to set up rules on that island in order to have a better life between them. From the novel, Ralph said Thats what this shell called. Ill give the conch to the next person to speak. He can hold it when hes speaking (Golding, 43). This shows that the only person who can speak is the one who hold the shell which called conch during the meeting. Ralph has set up the rules so that no one will interrupt when someone is speaking to ensure the smoothness of the meeting which shows us that they are still civilized boys that have moral and ethical codes of the English society. On the other hand, Jack is more interest in gaining power over the others to satisfy his most primal impulses which is his desires of hunting pigs. All the same you need an army-for hunting. Hunting pigs, said Jack on the novel (Golding, 43). Jack desires for power shows that savagery has started taking over his mind. When Jack begin acting savage, the savage side become evident with the power of the leader, Ralph, collapse. Jack overthrows Ralph as a leader. He manage to persuade the others boys to join his tribe, a tribe which involve with hunting pigs, making sacrifices to the beast and having fun without realizing that they were stranded on an deserted island. This is proved by the line Now listen. We might go later to the castle rock. But now Im going to get more of the biguns away from the conch and all that. Well kill the pig and give a feast. He paused and went on more slowly. And about the beast. When we kill well leave some of the kill for it. Then it wont bother us, maybe (Golding, 165). He and his tribe go so far until it results in the destruction of th e peaceful environment on the island as well as the collapsing of their civilized mind. The cleft of the theme is also demonstrate through the novels major symbol which are the conch that affiliate with character Ralph and The Lord of the Flies that affiliate with the character Jack. The conch that was found by Ralph is a powerful symbol which shows the democratic order on that island, agreeing Ralphs leadership that was determine through the election and also the power of assembly among the young boys. From the novel, Piggy said, We can use this to call the others. Have a meeting. Theyll come when they hear us (Golding, 22). This shows that the conch has the power to call the others for a meeting which represent the symbol of authority and order that related to the civilization among the boys. However, as the engagement between Ralph and Jack getting worse, the conch loses symbolic importance. You havent got it with you, said Jack, sneering. You left it behind. See, clever? And the conch doesnt count at the end of this island (Golding, 186). From what Jack has said, th is shows that the conch started to loses its power of authority and order and represent the decline of civilization on the island. In the meanwhile, The Lord of the Flies, which is a sacrifice to the suppositious beast on the island, contributes to the dominance of the savagery on the island and also symbolise Jacks authority over his tribe. From the novel, Jack spoke loudly, This head is for the beast. Its a gift (Golding, 170). In addition, the demolition of the conch at the scene where Piggy was killed manifests the complete destruction of civilization on the island. In the novel, the devastation of the conch is shows from the phase, The rock struck Piggy a glancing blow from chin to knee, the conch exploded into a thousand white fragments and ceased to exist(Golding, 222). At the end of this novel, the savagery has totally displaced civilization as the prevailing system on the island. The clash between the theme of civilization and savagery in this novel also can be explored through the symbol of fire which associate with civilization and the symbol of mask which associate with savagery. The symbol of fire in this novel is very important as it bring lots of meaning to the boys. It represents the hope of being rescue, survival and also civilization. In the novel, Ralph said Theres another thing. We can help them to find us. If a ship comes near the island they may not notice us. So we must make smoke on top of the mountain. We must make a fire(Golding, 49). This indicates that the boys know that the fire is very important because without the smoke from the fire, they would never be rescued. The symbol of fire shows the only civilization left on the island as it is a form of hope, survival and most importantly, rescue as Ralph said in the novel Your only hope is keeping a signal fire going as long as theres light to see. Then maybe a ship will notice the smoke and c ome and rescue us and take us home. But without that smoke weve got to wait till some ship comes by accident. We might wait years; till we were old (Golding, 219). On the other hand, the symbol of mask in this novel stands for savagery and barbaric behaviour. The mask has encouraged the incivility in the boys and provides them with a different identity. From the novel, Jack said For hunting. Like in the war. You know -dazzle paint. Like thing trying to look like something else (Golding, 79).The mask has made the boys started to transform from civil to savage. When the boys hide behind the mask, the boys somehow are given a new identity which gives confidence and a sense of carefree. Behind the masquerade, they commit acts of barbarity. It liberates them from shame and leads them into a savage like creatures. It also detaches them from reality and triggers them to neglect their responsibility. As the novel progress, Golding shows how different people feel the influences of the instincts of civilization and savagery to different degrees. Generally, however, Golding implies that the instinct of savagery is far more primal and fundamental to the human mind than the instinct of civilization. The Lord of the Flies is a chronicles of civilization giving way to savagery within human nature, as the young boys who were stranded on the island shaped by the supremely civilized British society become fully savage guided only by fear, superstition and desire.

Coursework How does J.B Priestley use dramatic devices in An Inspector Calls to convey his concerns and ideas to the members of the audience as well as interest and involve them in his play? 23rd, February 2005 The main theme of â€Å"An Inspector Calls† is responsibility. J.B Priestley wants to show the Birlings’ and the audience that we all share responsibility for other people’s welfare, and that wealthy people have obligations to look after those less fortunate than themselves. Priestley uses Inspector Goole to put across his views on society by portraying himself as a character. Through Inspector Goole Priestley is able to emphasize that with privileges come responsibilities to help others. In the 1930’s Priestley’s main concern was the social inequality in Britain. Priestly set up The Commonwealth Party in 1942. Their main arguments were public land ownership, greater democracy, and a new "morality" in politics. In 1945 Priestley’s party joined the labour party. Priestley was particularly influential in developing the idea of the Welfare State, this finally took place at the end of World War Two. The play is set in 1912 but was written and performed in 1945. This is significant as it allows J.B Priestley to make Mr. Birling seem even more ridiculous and naà ¯ve. For example, he mentions how there is not going to be a war, however by 1945 when the play was first performed the audience know that there were two wars between 1914 and 1945, World War One and World War Two, which began in 1939. Mr. Birling also mentions how the ship Titanic will not sink, ‘unsinkable, absolutely unsinkable’. Again in 1945 the audience know that Titanic did sink, consequently the things that Mr. Birling says, the audienc... ...stley is also conveying his ideas here. The audience would realise that everyone is responsible for each other. Priestley interests and involves the audience by having a lot of tension in the play â€Å"An Inspector Calls†. Priestley also interests them by having an exciting plot and a wide range of characters. He involves the audience by using dramatic irony very early on in the play and using characters to put across his concerns, such as the inspector in his speech tells the Birling’s "each of you helped to kill her." This is not only aimed at the characters on stage but at the audience too. Priestley’s message in â€Å"An Inspector Calls† is responsibility and how everyone is responsible for other people, we are all linked in society. This message is still relevant today because we still have responsibilities for other people and our actions do affect others.

There are four different types of play spaces availible. These are affective, transient, physical and permanent.These can be provided within a play setting or created by the children.Different types of play spaces will be more challenging and stimulating for children and they will be less likely to get bored or restless. Affective – An affect play space is a space that pays attention to the moods and feelings that children and young people bring, these are usaually calming play spaces. For example: music, sensory and art. Transient – A transient play space is a space that can be changed, adapted or moved about. These objects range from wooden blocks to basketball nets. E.g. basketball nets can be moved from outside to inside etc†¦ Examples of a transient play space would be: making dens, moving furniture and creating imaginative play spaces. Physical – A physical play space is a space that children can be physically active. Thesespaces are ideal for anything from running to fine motor skills. Examples of physical play are: running, wrestling, skipping, dancing and sliding. Permanent – A permanent play space is a space that can not be moved or changed in any way. For example: parks, swimming pools, football picthes and adventure playgrounds.sdf Outline how to idenify when children and young people need support within the play space. One of our roles as a playworker is to support children in their play. This means we should stand back and observe the play unless someone is going to  get hurt. We should let the children play without intervening but joining in if you are asked to or given play cues is totally fine. identifying when children and young people need support within the play space is usaually straight forward but sometimes it can be a little bit tricky. The best way to do this to watch out for any play cues you might be given, then step back when you are no longer needed. Another way of supporting the play is if you see a play space not being played with, go and play with a activity and sooner or later you will attract attention and children will start to get intrested. When two or more children start to play with this activity you should move away and go back to observing. How a playworker can support, without taking control, children and you people to adapt a play space. There are many ways a playworker can support children and young people to adapt a play space without taking control. Most of the ways to support children without taking over are mentioned above but they differ slightly. The ones that apply are: don’t intervene unless asked, respond to play cues with a playful reponses and dont intervene unless you see a hazard. If the children want to adapt the play space and seem to be having trouble wait until they give you play cues or come and ask you to help. If they do ask you for help ask the children what they want help with or tell ask them to tell you what to do and you’ll do it. This way it is still the children adapting they play space you are just giving them a helping hand. How to bring play to an end in a way that is sensitive to the children and young people and their level of development and involvement. I am aware of plenty of ways to bring play to an end, some of these methods include: using a bell, using an egg timer or counting down. In my placement we tell the children we’ll stop playing to get tuck shop 5 minutes before the tuck shop opens after the children get their tuck they are free to go back to playing. 10 minutes before the end of the play session we tell the  children they have 5 minutes to play with the toys then we will do a group game for the last 5 minute until the childrens session is over. Why is it important to reflect on all aspects of your own playwork practice, including relationships with other people. It is important to reflect on all aspects of your own playwork practise quite regularly (at least once or twice a month). The reason you should do this often is so you can see how to improve or adapt your playwork practise as soon as possible. Looking back on your playwork practise and self-evaluating it allows you to see the things that work and the things that don’t so you can concentrate on the things that you need to improve. It is also important to reflect on your relationships with other people so you can build on them to create a successful relationship where both people are happy and content. What is meant by reflective practice? The definition of reflective practice is â€Å"the capacity to reflect on action so as to engage in a process of continuous learning†. This means it allows us to constantly learn by reflecting on what we already know and working towards being better playworkers. what is meant by constructive feedback? The definition of constructive feedback is â€Å"letting people know in a helpful way how they are doing, and how their performance is being perceived†. Constructive feedback can be positive or negative this means giving someone praise if they did something really good or tell someone in a very nice way that they didnt do very good and ways they could to improve. For example: â€Å"you did well in that but why dont you try this next time to make it even better†. Constructive feedback is important because it lets you learn from your mistakes in a positive way and better yourself. How to gather and handle constructive feedback from others, for example colleagues and parents. Gathering constructive feedback from colleagues and parents is important because it allows you to look back on what you have done good and what you could do slightly better next time. You could ask colleagues what you did well or how you could of done it better or do a questionarie with colleagues and parents to find out how you can improve and remember never react badly to constructive feedback beacause people are are just trying to help you be better at what you do. How to use observations and feedback to adapt your own playwork practice. Using observations and feedback allows you to adapt your playwork practise so you can concentrate on what needs to be improved whilst keeping your practice up to the highest standard possible. As I said above the to do this is to ask questions about your polaywork pratcise and ask them if they have any opinions or feedback that may help you improve at what you do.
